Job Description


The role of IP Engineer IV is to be one of the senior leaders of the networking team in support of WOW's voice, video, and data products. The successful candidate shall help to develop and maintain the high-level design/strategy plan for the overall logical and technical architecture for Metro, Access, and Backbone networks. This individual will provide technical leadership and consulting across the organization, from strategic decision through implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Generates conceptual, logical, and physical network architectures, documents, testing analyses, test plans and risk assessments to ensure sound architecture that aligns with company's long term strategy

  • Lead teams that research, analyze and design network architecture in order to best meet company requirements

  • Researches and analyzes the most complex data, voice, and video network and hardware problems

  • Researches and analyzes significant, complex network problems that require evaluation of intangibles

  • Determines methods and procedures to be implemented and used on the most complex new technologies to enhance performance

  • Determines approach for implementation, based on assessment of market/regional needs

  • Researches technological advancements to ensure that voice, data, and video networking solutions are continuously improved, supported, and aligned with industry and company standards

  • Has a role in evaluating highly complex data, voice, or video networking technologies to understand their potential and recommends future direction

  • Evaluates cost analyses and vendor comparisons for large-scale projects to ensure cost-effective and efficient operations, and measures feasibility of various approaches

  • Ensures adherence to model created and overall budgetary guidelines

  • Revises model and budgetary guidelines as appropriate and to ensure company and client needs are met

  • Recommends highly complex investment decisions to management and internal customers based on results of independent assessment of current and future data or voice network performance, stability, and network management issues

  • Identifies, adjusts and implements changes to investment based upon new information

  • Work with other engineering teams to ensure detailed designs are deployable, and able to be operated with minimal impacts to customers, and operating expenses

  • Work with vendor partners to ensure engineering requirements are aligned with product roadmaps

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or 5-7+ years' experience in network architectures.

  • Routing (OSPF, IS-IS, BGP) and switching expertise

  • Extensive network engineering and architecture experience - excellent understanding of Internet and datacenter topologies

  • Experience evaluating, configuring, and troubleshooting a variety of network equipment especially Juniper, Nokia (Alcatel-Lucent), and Cisco - solid understanding of associated vendor hardware architecture and characteristics

  • Thorough understanding of various L2/L3 protocols and technologies: TCP/IP (v4 & v6) and related protocols, multicast, MPLS-based services, QOS, BFD, LACP, VRRP, STP, etc.

  • Understanding of Layer 4-7 switching/load balancing and application integration

  • Solid understanding of network based security protocols and methods (eg IPSec, SSL, TLS, ACLs)

  • Ability to investigate new technologies, develop scalable network solutions, and put together well-thought-out documents to propose new configurations, architectures, services, and policies

  • Analytical approach to problem solving and usage of methodical & documented processes to propose network enhancements

  • Experience in a 24/7 Internet facing production environment and ensuring customer requirements are effectively anticipated and met according to scope, criticality, and severity level

  • Must be able to perform basic mathematical functions/calculations
