Job Description

The Technology Architect is responsible for evaluating, designing, and testing new technologies and services relating to the utilization and delivery of software systems, network technologies, and the related products and services that generate revenue on them.  The Technology Architect will take the what they have learned from their research to create designs and build deployment plans for various engineering teams to execute on.  This role is responsible for working cross functionality to take initial concepts to the proof of concept testing phase quickly.   This role is also responsible for mentoring, coaching, and training team members on new and existing technological solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes expertise in agile methodology and SCRUM to manage the backlog and deliver on commitments. Mentors junior level engineers relative to SCRUM methodology.
  • Translate and document vague product and technological concepts into tangible and actionable solutions.
  • Provides strategic input to the departmental roadmap by keeping abreast of technology advances and partnering with vendors and internal peer groups to configure and test at a high level.
  • Drives the R&D function of new technology advances for network products and services.
  • Drives the architecture of the lab systems to include development, pre production, quality assurance, and automated testing functions.
  • Quickly establish proof of concept tests regarding the evaluation of new technological solutions.  Responsible for quickly assessing solutions and determining if they need to be reassessed.
  • Drives the selection of network solutions, systems, and services, to achieve the desired results of the organization.
  • Drives the selection and use of software systems to be purchased or developed to solve tough organizational problems
  • Drives the selection of the appropriate private or public cloud infrastructure to be used in creating cost effective solutions.
  • Ensures that all proposed solutions can provide the appropriate telemetry for monitoring and analytics
  • Evaluates third party vendors and assists in writing the technical requirements that go into RFI, or RFP documents and processes.
  • Presents solutions and high level test results to product leadership and recommends move forward strategies with products and technology.
  • Partners with leadership in engineering, finance, product marketing, etc. to create business cases that justify the use of new technology solutions including potential impact on revenue, CAPEX and OPEX.
  • Prepares high level design documentation regarding product functionality, network connectivity, API flows or the like for product operation and delivery.
  • Works with other product and integration engineers to formulate detailed design, testing, and rollout plans for products and services.
  • Drives continuous technology and process improvements with the technologies the company deploys and the automation used to manage and deliver solutions to customers.
  • Drives cross functional engagement with new technology advances through the use of steering committees and team meetings.
  • Acts as subject matter expert on the team for 5+ areas of the technology stack which can include but not be limited to: IP Networking, software development, database administration, VOIP, Cloud Ecosystems, Systems Administration, and/or Systems Integration.
  • Communicates technical and non-technical concepts across a wide variety of groups
  • Oversee and complete special projects.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • BS or BA from an accredited college or university or appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • 5 or more technical certifications or certificates in IP Networking, Cloud Systems, Systems Administration, VOIP, or Software Development preferred.

Experience/Skills Needed:

  • 15+ years of progressive IT or telecommunications experience is preferred. 
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience is required.
  • Expertise and knowledge in the majority of the following protocols: DHCP, NTP, DNS/ENUM, TFTP, SIP, MGCP, H.248, TLS, XMPP, SMTP, RTCP, TCP, UDP, RTP, IPV4/6, DSCP/TOS, SCTP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, YANG, NetConf
  • Expertise with hypervisors, orchestration, and Cloud ecosystems such as VMWare, OpenStack, Kubernetes, AWS or similar
  • Experience in software development with languages such as python, golang, perl, javascript, php, & Ruby
  • Experience with database administration in technologies such as MS SQL, MySQL, PostgresSQL, Hadoop, Cassandra or similar.
  • Expertise with open source frameworks such as LAMP, and SMACK
  • Experience with software defined network orchestrators such as Open Daylight or ONOS.
  • Experience with automation frameworks such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or similar.
  • Expertise with software repositories and continuous integration and deployment processes (CICD, GIT, Cron, Jenkins)
  • Expertise with SOAP/XML, REST, and JSON frameworks and API’s
  • Expertise in fiber optic based transport technologies (PON, C/DWDM, OC-X, SONET)
  • Expertise in MEF standards relative to Ethernet Deployments and best practices.
  • Expertise with HFC network and DOCSIS standards and best practices.
  • Expertise with one or more network platform operating systems such as IOS, AOS, SROS, Junos.
  • Experience with automated testing technologies for software applications and/or networks.
  • Expert level knowledge of the OSI model
