Job Description

The Optical Network Engineer IV is responsible for architecting, designing, developing and qualifying DWDM solutions to support wavelength products within the WOW! core and metro network domains. This position will collaborate with various engineering and wholesale departments to define optical network specifications and related processes to sustainably scale our transport infrastructure and tools necessary to support our infrastructure.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Provide senior level optical network design solutions to support voice, video, and data services
  • Responsible for DWDM design, including coherent optical networks, with multiple lambdas at 100Gbps+ speeds
  • Responsible for overseeing compliance of engineering standards
  • Must be able to implement Next Generation Packet Optical solutions while taking into consideration legacy Layer 1 Transport, Layer 2 Ethernet, DWDM, SONET, Core/Edge Routing, and Legacy TDM Networks
  • Must be able to support OTN deployments and commissioning
  • Must be able to develop eMOPs and conduct peer review with internal and external departments
  • Must have experience gathering business requirements to use in network design process
  • Identifies and evaluates industry trends in transport related systems to serve as a source of information and advice for upper management
  • Communicates with project manager(s), technical team lead(s), team members and business groups on issues and the status of work planned and completed
  • Maintain availability for after-hours maintenance support on an as-needed basis
  • May manage transport resources or act in a team lead capacity
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering preferred or equivalent certification or industry experience.

-Experience/Skills Needed:

  • 7-10 years of optical network engineering experience in telecommunications environments
  • Expertise with Cisco, Ciena, Infinera, MRV and related telecommunications equipment
  • Firm understanding of optical theory, ITU standards, Ohms Law, fundamentals of transport technologies such as TOADM, ROADM, Fixed Grid, and Flex Grid spectrum management
  • Experience with CWDM/DWDM modeling
  • Experience with core network routing vendors: Juniper, Cisco, Nokia, Arista
  • Experience with core network routing protocols/languages: OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, Netconf, YANG
  • Proven leadership and architecture experience building and managing highly available, critical data transport environments, architectures, and related technologies
  • Ability to consistently meet engineering deadlines, with a high level of responsibility and autonomy, strong project management and organizational skills
  • Advanced understanding of business/engineering economics and lifecycle management
  • Experience developing active and passive optical network solutions
  • Must be comfortable in rapidly changing and sometimes ambiguous work situations
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to participate in peer reviews and inspections of requirements documents
  • Strong leadership, project management, time management and problem solving skills
  • Strong relational skills and be able to effectively communicate technical and non-technical ideas, written and verbal, to individuals and large groups

-Computer Skills:

  • Must be experienced in using modeling tools: Ciena One Planner, Ciena One Design, Blue Planet, Cisco Transport Planner, LightRiver netFlex
  • Must be experienced in Gsuite and Microsoft office products
  • Must be experienced in using diagramming software: Visio, Lucidchart, Omnigraffle
  • General understanding of Command Line Interface, CLI, TL1
  • General experience using Telnet programs: Putty, SecureCRT, iTerm, and/or ProCom
