Job Description

The Manager of Database Development is responsible for managing and coordinating resources and processes needed to deliver data solutions to support the enterprise. This individual will have hands on involvement in design, development and testing of new projects as well as responsibility for general maintenance and troubleshooting activities for data engineering and software development production systems and interfaces. Technologies include traditional database objects like stored procedures, replication technologies and DaaS. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Work with software development team and business analysts to plan and execute projects, ensuring that the database development team has appropriate requirements, technical specifications, direction and resources to deliver solutions effectively and timely
  • Establish realistic timeline estimates while ensuring projects remain on target to meet deadlines
  • Manage database development resources and execute on multiple projects simultaneously with distributed teams
  • Provide leadership and guidance to coach, motivate and lead team members to optimum performance levels and career development
  • Perform and oversee development tasks associated with the design and development of database related project elements using Microsoft SQL Server as the primary platform
  • Help developers resolve technical problems as well as work with department heads to solve business related issues
  • Plan, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard information against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification or disclosure
  • Develop methods for integrating different products so they work properly together, such as customizing commercial databases to fit specific needs
  • Assist database administrator (DBA) in defining architectural standards for database applications
  • Mentor junior developers and work as a team member to improve group processes and set standards
  • Identify and evaluate industry trends in database systems to serve as a source of information and advice for upper management
  • Evaluate new technologies from simple research through setting up and running an effective proof-of-concept, to determine if and when they should be incorporated into the business
  • Participate in database documentation, training and deployment efforts
  • Provide guidance to others by reviewing work and providing recommendations for design, coding or testing approach, which could include conducting or participating in code walkthroughs or other methods to ensure code quality
  • Maintain availability for after-hours production support on an as-needed basis
  • Communicate with department management, project managers, team members and business groups on issues and the status of work planned and completed
  • Other duties as assigned

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent certification or experience

-Experience/Skills Needed:

  • 8+ years of SQL Server development and integration experience
  • Expertise with SQL Server 2008/2012 including TSQL and stored procedures
  • Must have a strong understanding of how the SQL Server database engine works, including but not limited to physical storage, indexing, partitioning, physical database design best practices, and the query optimizer
  • Experience with services and DaaS a big plus
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience with SQL Server administration
  • Experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), DTS, OLTP/OLAP design and development
  • Experience with Postgres a plus
  • PL/SQL coding experience and Oracle Database experience a plus
  • Experience working with large sets of data
  • Knowledge of RDBMS principals such as table design, normalization, ACID properties, relationships, referential integrity and how these apply to SQL Server.
  • Knowledge of tracing, monitoring, and auditing facilities and methods for SQL Server.
  • Use of version control software, such as Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS)
  • Proven leadership and architecture experience building and managing highly available, critical and transactional data environments, systems architectures and technologies
  • Must be comfortable in rapidly changing and sometimes ambiguous work situations.
  • Keen attention to detail and complex problem solving abilities from an operational and technical perspective. Ability to work independently and engage manager as needed
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to manage changes to requirements through effective application of change control processes and tools
  • Ability to participate in peer reviews and inspections of requirements documents
  • Strong leadership, project management, time management and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work with technical and non-technical business owners to get things done
  • Strong problem solving and root cause analysis skills
  • Experience with development using the Microsoft .Net Framework and Visual Studio is a plus
  • Cable billing system knowledge a big plus

Fundamental knowledge of standard desktop business applications and tools
