Job Description

The PON-HFC Architect will be responsible for evaluating, designing, and testing new technologies and services relating to how we deliver services to customers over PON (Passive Optical Network) and HFC networks.  The PON-HFC Architect will take what they have learned from their research to create designs and reference architectures for various engineering teams to execute on relating to POC’s, new market trials, or technology upgrades.  This role is responsible for working cross functionally to take initial designs to the proof of concept testing phase quickly.   This role is also responsible for mentoring, coaching, and training team members on PON & HFC networks and solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Translate and document vague product and technological concepts into tangible and actionable solutions.
  • Provides strategic input to the departmental roadmap by keeping abreast of technology advances and partnering with vendors and internal peer groups to configure and test at a high level.
  • Drives the R&D function of new technology advances for network products and services and our path to 10 Gig customers.
  • Quickly establish proof of concept tests regarding the evaluation of new technological solutions.  Responsible for quickly assessing solutions and determining if they need to be reassessed.
  • Partners with various engineering and operational leaders to define and measure the HFC & PON strategy for the enterprise
  • Drives the selection of network solutions, systems, and services relating to PON-HFC technologies, to achieve the desired results of the organization.
  • Ensures that all proposed solutions can provide the appropriate telemetry for monitoring and analytics
  • Identifies and organizes performance data to create KPI’s for the HFC network
  • Drives the selection, creation, and curation of tools, datasets, and automated processes used to manage PON and HFC networks.
  • Evaluates third party vendors and assists in writing the technical requirements that go into RFI, or RFP documents and processes.
  • Presents solutions and high level test results to engineering leadership and recommends move forward strategies with products and technology.
  • Partners with leadership in engineering, finance, and operations, to create business cases that justify the use of new technology solutions including potential impact on revenue, CAPEX and OPEX.
  • Prepares high level design documentation regarding product functionality, network connectivity, API flows or the like for product operation and delivery.
  • Drives cross functional engagement with new technology advances through the use of steering committees and team meetings.
  • Subject matter expert on PON and HFC technologies, particularly as it relates to the distribution of services in the outside plant.
  • Communicates technical and non-technical concepts across a wide variety of groups
  • Utilizes expertise in agile methodology and SCRUM to manage the backlog and deliver on commitments.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • BS or BA from an accredited college or university or appropriate combination of education and experience.

-Experience/Skills Needed:

  • 15+ years of progressive telecommunications experience is preferred, 10 years required.
  • Expertise in fiber optic based transport technologies and distribution systems. (PON, C/DWDM, OC-X, SONET)
  • Expertise in MEF standards relative to Ethernet Deployments and best practices.
  • Expertise with HFC network and DOCSIS standards and best practices.
  • Knowledge of telemetry management systems and how to make sense of the data provided.
  • Ability to read, interpret and edit Auto Cad and other Mapping tools
  • Knowledge of the OSI model
  • Demonstrates a high level of transparency, collaboration and communication skills

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates capabilities in presenting ideas to executives and peers
  • Adaptability with changes to project requirements, and work situations

Computer Skills:

Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, G-Suite, Mac OSX, Unix Like Operating systems
