WOW! is currently hiring a Lab Services Engineer!

The Lab Services Engineer as part of the Sustaining Engineering Team, is located at the ARC (advanced research center) and responsible for the 24x7 operations, maintenance, and continuous improvement of all lab environments. This role ensures smooth functioning of physical facilities, electrical systems, security, network, fiber optic connectivity, cabling, and CPE (customer premise equipment) rack management. The engineer collaborates closely with the sustaining team to troubleshoot, maintain, and optimize the lab's infrastructure and tools, adhering to industry regulations and company guidelines.

What you’ll be doing:

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Oversee and monitor all technical activities within the ARC lab environment, ensuring ongoing maintenance and uptime

  • Primary contact for troubleshooting and repair of lab services inclusive of network services, RF services, fiber services, and compute infrastructure that impact all engineering test activities

  • Collaborate with the Sustaining Engineering Team to design, develop, test, and maintain lab systems and UAT (user acceptance testing) environments to align with production standards

  • Actively participate in AAR (after-action reports) investigations and testing with the Sustaining Engineering team

  • Administer and troubleshoot computer networks, including systems software, hardware configurations, applications software, and related network infrastructure

  • Work with NOC, Sustaining, and Lab Architect to define standards for monitoring of lab equipment and performance to ensure proper functionality in compliance with manufacturer specifications and company specifications

  • Perform and oversee preventive maintenance procedures and document activities to ensure consistent lab functionality

  • Ensures the ongoing maintenance and integrity of all lab services equipment and the security of lab facilities in compliance with company guidelines

  • Performs advanced trouble-shooting activities on complex lab networks routinely

  • Remote hands troubleshooting with team members to provide expedient restoration of services and excellent customer service

  • Participate in the coordination of and oversee testing and inspecting of equipment for operational performance

  • Actively manage ticket queues (e.g., ServiceNow and Jira), ensuring timely resolution of day-to-day operational workflows and sustaining engineering tasks

  • Installation (rack and stack) and wiring of a variety of network devices found in labs, CO’s, Headends and data centers

  • All other duties as assigned

Education:

  • High School Degree or GED

Experience/Skills Needed:

  • 2-3 years of experience in a headend or data center network administration

  • Certifications preferred such as; JNCIA, CCNA, CCNP

  • Strong understanding of network infrastructure, including fiber and coax cabling systems, network hardware, application transport, and network protocols

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills

  • Network security experience with a solid understanding of WAN, LAN, firewalls, and other network security protocols

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, managers or employees

  • Knowledge of fiber optic networks (XGS PON, GPON, DWDM)

  • Knowledge of RF Network Technologies (DOCSIS)

Computer Skills:

  • Microsoft Applications (i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Word)

  • Knowledge of networking protocols: MPLS, BGP, and IPv6 etc.

  • Terminal Applications (i.e. SecureCRT, Putty, etc…) - preferred

  • Familiar with: DevOps tools (Git, ELK, TIGK, Kubernetes)

  • Collaboration Applications (i.e. Lucid Chart, Slack, Zoom, etc)

  • Service NOW Ticket Systems

  • IPAM Applications (Netbox, SolarWinds, etc…) - preferred

  • Knowledge of a variety of consumer products such as computing, gaming, streaming etc
