Database Engineer III

WOW! is currently hiring a Database Developer III!

The Database Developer III is responsible for designing, developing, and testing databases to support Data Engineering and Software Development projects in an environment primarily using MS SQL Server and AWS Postgres RDBMS. This role involves mentoring junior engineers, establishing team standards and best practices, and facilitating collaboration between application developers and internal WOW customers to ensure the success of development projects.

What you’ll be doing:

Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design system data architecture based on business requirements and provide accurate effort estimates for database-related project components.

  • Develop, test, and implement modifications to resolve database issues and enhance functionality as needed.

  • Analyze, summarize, and review data; report findings, interpret results, and provide recommendations.

  • Create and support stored procedures and APIs that adhere to standard security protocols for delivering data to developers.

  • Plan and oversee the installation and testing of system improvements.

  • Maintain security protocols to protect data from accidental or unauthorized modification, damage, or disclosure.

  • Provide technical support to developers and testers to resolve data-related issues.

  • Mentor other database developers and collaborate with the team to improve processes and establish necessary standards.

  • Create realistic project timelines while ensuring adherence to deadlines in an Agile environment.

  • Contribute to database documentation, training, and deployment efforts.

  • Communicate effectively with Scrum team members regarding issues, progress, and completed work.

  • Review team members' work, offering recommendations on design, coding, and testing approaches; this may include participating in code reviews to ensure code quality.

  • Provide after-hours production support as needed.

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously across distributed teams, taking ownership of assigned work.

What YOU need is:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent certification or experience

Experience/Skills Needed:

  • 4+ years of SQL Server development and data ETL experience.

  • 4+ years of database development and stored procedure experience, with expertise in SQL Server or Postgres.

  • Strong understanding of database engines (SQL Server or Postgres), including indexing, partitioning, physical database design, and query optimization.

  • Basic SQL Server administration experience to communicate effectively with DBAs.

  • Experience with ETL tools like SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SnapLogic, or Informatica.

  • Experience handling large data sets.

  • Familiarity with AWS database offerings (PostgreSQL, Aurora PostgreSQL, and DynamoDB) is a plus.

  • Experience with GraphQL is a plus.

  • Knowledge of cable billing systems is highly preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technical and non-technical ideas clearly in both written and verbal formats.

  • Comfortable working in rapidly changing and sometimes ambiguous situations.

  • Keen attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills from both an operational and technical perspective.

  • Ability to work independently while effectively engaging with a manager when necessary.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

Computer Skills:

  • Microsoft Applications (i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Word)
